The main goal of the Adiwiyata school is to instill a culture of caring for the environment in students for a sustainable future.

The core of the Adiwiyata program is the principles of education, participation, and sustainability.

Education here is defined as all school program policies and practices that aim to foster lifelong learning for each student. The principle of participation includes the involvement of all members of the school community, including the principal, teachers, students, parents, and school staff, in the implementation of the planned program. Then the principle of sustainability means that all programs are planned for a sustainable life. Therefore, the program is not only temporary, but is intended to be habituated forever in the school environment. Through this main principle, it is further described in the school’s policies and activity programs as follows:

First, it is important to understand the school’s Adiwiyata policy.
Schools must understand the regulations on the school Adiwiyata policy from the Department of Education and the Ministry of Environment. Before participating in the Adiwiyata school competition, it is important to first understand the regulations in order to effectively realize Adiwiyata schools. Understanding these regulations can be done by reading the regulations or by attending several socialization sessions about Adiwiyata schools.

Then, determine regional policies.
Regional policies here refer to policies in the school environment. After understanding the existing regulations, the school determines the direction of the Adiwiyata school model policy that will be implemented. For example, by developing an environmentally friendly curriculum, we can invite students to learn about and care for plants.

Third, the balance of biotic and abiotic elements in the realm of art.
In life on Earth, there are two main components that form existence, namely biotic and abiotic elements. Biotic is simply related to living things such as animals, plants, and humans. While abiotic elements such as water, air, and soil. In this adiwiyata school, the balance between abiotic and biotic elements is very important to be realized. How to do it? One way is to plant plants in the school environment. Its growth can produce ornamental plants, medicinal plants, vegetables, and fruits.

Not only plants, schools can also make fish ponds to spread fish seeds. Later, the fish can be harvested together with the school community. Furthermore, abiotic factors by arranging rocks, soil, and managing water efficiently in schools. Water is managed carefully and not wasted to avoid waste.

In terms of art, the school environment can be decorated with several slogans about cleanliness and protecting the universe. For example, let’s throw garbage in its place, let’s take care of our earth so that it doesn’t shed tears, and many other slogans. In addition, another option is to make paintings on the empty walls of the school. Of course, the paintings must be associated with a beautiful and peaceful natural atmosphere.

Fourth, the role of the school community.
The realization of an adiwiyata school will not be realized if the school community does not together instill positive habits in protecting nature. Therefore, there needs to be direct involvement in social service activities or indirectly by reminding others about small things, such as politely reprimanding school residents who litter.

Fifth, literacy culture.
In addition to environmental aspects, it is also important to improve mental health. In this case, by fostering reading and writing literacy in the school environment. One way is to provide a reading corner in the classroom and empower the library. The school also provides direction and inspiration to school residents to utilize the reading corner that has been prepared.

Through these important points, several schools have the potential to achieve success as Adiwiyata schools. The goal of this program is not just victory, but also involves sustainable practices to create a friendly and sustainable environment. However, the essence and spirit of this program lies in the formation of a mindset of school residents to preserve the environment.
